I'm going to guess that guys don't know the difference between warm and cool tones. :) I like it. What if you made Katie coloful and her background black and white so she really popped at ya?
Also, you should look at Cody's brother's website, he does all sorts of cool photoshop stuff you can steal ;) www.theschick.com

Actually, I thought about it, but I figured if I did that it would look scary, like she had come down with something life-threatening.
The idea was to create a form-fitting "mat" for the subject herself that inspired a certain coloer while not putting on top of her.
